Many who have a hobby greenhouse love being able to step away from the stress of life and tend their plants year round, no matter what the weather.

Should you choose a hobby greenhouse kit or go for a DIY greenhouse?

  • They enjoy the ability to cultivate species that would not  otherwise survive in their location.
  • They enjoy the fruits of their year-round endeavors with fresh flowers and edibles that would not typically exist in their region.
  • This vast enjoyment has lead to a boom in greenhouse demand.
  • There are many hobby greenhouse kits out on the market.
  • There are also a number of do it yourself plans.
  • If you are not sure which is better for your personal needs then you need to know about the pros and cons of both.

How can you tell what will suit you best?

  • Ask yourself some basic questions.

What do you plan on using the greenhouse for?

  • This will determine the size you need.
  • If you intend to start seedlings in it that will go into the ground then you do not need a greenhouse that is as large as one that will hold plants to produce crops year round.
  • It is always a good idea to look at the size of the space you have and then try to make the most out of it.
  • The general trend is that those who become hooked typically want more greenhouse space.
  • Location is important though, as food crop plants need a lot of strong sunlight, while houseplants and flowers usually require less.

Next you should determine if you want something portable or permanent greenhouse structure.

Portable greenhouses are like tents and can be very easy to set up and move around. If you are looking for something to use seasonally a portable kit might be perfect.  Permanent structures may require building permits or following a design ordinance.

You will want to consider framing style for either a kit or a plan.

  • Both kits and plans can be found in A-frame, Gothic Arch (rounded sides are great for rain and snow) and the Span Roof (barn roof styled, also superior for snowy areas) styles. You can also find lean-to plans and kits.
  • As you can tell, kits come in a vast array of sizes, shapes, styles and materials.
  • This is nice in some ways, because you are likely to find a kit that has most everything you want in a greenhouse.
  • A DIY plan can be altered to suit whatever need you happen to have, which makes it endlessly useful.
  • Many kits come mostly pre-assembled and can be put together in the final location in just a few hours.
  • Building a greenhouse yourself from parts, either new or recycled, can take a very long time depending on the complexity of the design chosen.

The best way to decide is to do some research on the Internet.

Many gardening websites and greenhouse builder sites have listings of specifications for their kits and plans that can help you locate the one that will handle the snow load, wind, or other conditions in your area.
