Skin Care Differences for Oily, Combination or Acne Prone Skin

Often, people use acne treatment products as their preferred skin care products whether they have oily skin, combination skin or acne prone skin. However, the truth is that all three types of skin have very different skin care needs. Oily skin needs to control shine and reduce oil production while also making sure that bacteria isn’t building up for future breakouts. Combination skin needs to make sure that both the oily and the dry skin are being treated. And, of course, people with acne prone skin just want to find a product that will help get rid of acne. How do you know what to look for in a skin care product for each skin type? Fortunately, there’s a great deal of skin care advice out there that can help you!

Oily Skin: Oily skin doesn’t necessarily mean skin that breaks out in acne. However, because excess oil on the skin’s surface can cause clogged pores which can, in turn cause acne breakouts, people with oily skin need to look for skin care products that have an element of acne treatment in them, such as a low concentration of Salicylic Acid. You’ll also want to look for products that have many of the botanicals that naturally fight against shine!

Combination Skin: Combination skin typically means that you have excess oil in your “T-Zone” (your forehead, nose and chin) and dryer skin elsewhere. For this reason, you’ll want to find gentle products that don’t dry or irritate your non-oily skin areas and that exfoliate your skin to both remove dead skin cells trapped in oilier regions and those that may flake off on dryer regions. If you do experience minor breakouts in your T-Zone region, you’ll want to treat them using a spot treatment, not using an acne treatment that goes all over your face. This is because you don’t want to unnecessarily aggravate or dry out the non-oily regions of your skin.

Acne Prone Skin: For those with acne prone skin, you’ll certainly want to investigate not only a three-step acne treatment product plan (one that includes a cleanser, a treatment and a moisturizer so that you don’t over dry your skin while treating your acne) and evaluate factors such as your diet and life style. Acne prone skin is one of the hardest skin types to treat, and the temptation is always there to treat acne by over drying it. Don’t make the mistake of trying to treat your acne simply by drying it out. Just like with oily or combination skin, you want to address all of your skin’s health needs, not just get rid of your acne breakouts.

No matter what your skin type, there’s a skin care product solution for you. You just need to know what you’re looking for!
