If you have acne breakouts and want to work to get rid of acne, then the first step is to understand what causes acne. While acne can be related to a number of causes and often can be caused by a number of factors in combination, trying to identify what factors cause your acne can help you to adjust those factors and start your journey to clear, healthy skin. Here are five things that cause acne. Which factor causes your acne and how can you correct it?

Hormones

The most common cause of acne in both teenagers and adults is hormones. Typically, this is because the overactive hormones cause additional secretion from the sebecus (oil) glands. That oil can then clog pores and result in the growth of bacteria that leads to acne breakouts. While hormonal acne cannot be entirely cured, using a regulated acne treatment program can reduce breakouts.

Stress

The signs of stress can appear on your skin both in the form of lines and furrows and in the form of acne breakouts. It is not a wives’ tale that stress can cause acne. Work to minimize stress through relaxation techniques such as yoga, and your skin will enjoy the benefits.

Diet & Hydration

While it is not true that simply eating an order of greasy French fries can cause an acne breakout, diet does play a role in acne and blemishes. So does hydration because the healthiest skin is hydrated skin. Keeping a healthy diet that is low in processed foods and fast foods and high in fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as making sure that you drink eight glasses of water per day, can lead to acne free skin.

Skin Care Products & Makeup

Acne can also be caused by a skin reaction to or irritation from skin care products or makeup. To avoid breakouts from topical makeup and skin products, try to look for products that are marketed as gentle and that contain more natural ingredients and fewer chemical ingredients. You should also always test-patch a skin care product or new makeup purchase on a small area of skin before you apply it to your entire face to determine if it will ultimately cause a reaction or acne breakout.

Poor Hygiene

Acne is ultimately caused by bacteria that builds up in your pores, and the culprit that allows that bacteria to build up is clogged pores. To avoid having your pores get clogged, you should be sure to wash your face twice daily to remove dead skin cells from the surface that can clog pores. Also, be sure to use an acne treatment that includes bacteria fighting ingredients to kill bacteria that may result in blemishes.
