If you are looking for an acne scar treatment solution, then the good news is that you’ve found acne treatment products that have worked effectively to heal and cure your acne and leave you breakout free! However, it’s true that if you’ve struggled with acne for any period of time, you may have scars or marks left on your skin that still make you feel as though your skin is not flawless. The good news for you is that there are many ways to get rid of acne scars. The first step, however, is to determine if what you have are acne scars or simply post-acne marks.

What is an Acne Scar?

Acne scars, which should only be treated by a dermatologist, come in four varieties. The key to indentifying an acne scar is that it alters the surface texture of the skin and is not just a discoloration. “Ice Pick Scars” are deep and narrow, “Rolling Scars” create a wave-like appearance, “Hypertrophic or Keloid Scars” are raised scars (and may fade on their own over time) and “Boxcar Scars” are angular scars. Again, an acne scar will be above the skin or create a pit in the skin. If you have true acne scars, you should seek the advice of a dermatologist.

What is a Post-Acne Mark or Spot?

A post-acne mark or spot may be confused with an acne scar, but it is not technically an acne scar. If you have dark, discolored spots on your face or other area of your skin where you had previous acne breakouts that won’t seem to fade but do not create a pit or surface area change, then what you have is a post-acne mark or spot. Fortunately, you do not need to spend large amounts of money treating post-acne spots or marks as they can be treated with a lightening agent.

What Type of Products Treat Post-Acne Marks and Spots?

You’ll want to look for products specifically designed to lighten skin pigment, preferably using Hydroquinone, which is the strongest skin lightening agent that you can obtain without a prescription. While these products may be pricier than simply a normal acne treatment product, they will certainly be more cost effective than seeking professional treatment from a dermatologist. Also, look for products that have been tested and approved by dermatologists.

If you’ve done the hard work of getting rid of your acne breakouts, then there’s no reason that you shouldn’t do the extra work to have perfectly smooth and clear skin. First, determine if you have actual acne scars or if you have post-acne marks and spots. Then take the appropriate action by either seeking the advice of a dermatologist for acne scars or purchasing an appropriate skin lightener for post-acne marks and spots.
