When it comes to using acne treatment products, there are many lists, experts and people willing to give advice on what you should and shouldn’t do. However, when it comes to the more complicated elements of how to have healthy, acne-free skin by choosing to live a lifestyle that supports beautiful skin, then the conversation becomes more complicated. Having beautiful, breakout-free skin isn’t just about skin care products. It’s also about getting great skin care advice. Here’s a start to that advice with three myths about diet and acne.
Eating Fries Will Make You Break Out: Eating French fries will not, we promise, make you break out. Greasy food does not necessarily lead to greasy skin. However, it is true that if you eat a consistently unhealthy diet (and a diet full or greasy, fried carbohydrates would count as an unhealthy diet), then your body won’t be healthy. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so a healthy body (via health diet) means healthy skin. And healthy skin is acne free.
It Doesn’t Matter What You Eat. Diet Has Nothing to Do with Acne. However, while it’s true that a single happy day of eating French fries isn’t going to result in an acne breakout, what you eat does matter. For the healthiest, acne free skin, you want to eat a diet that is heavy in antioxidants (these are found in dark-colored vegetables and fruits) and low in chemicals, preservatives and foods with excess hormones (like factory-farmed meat or dairy). You also want to eat foods that will help you stay hydrated, because healthy, breakout free skin is hydrated skin. Eating a diet high in fruit and vegetables can not only mean that you’re getting plenty of antioxidants, it can also mean that you’re keeping your body more regularly hydrated than if you only drank water.
Vegetarians Have Better Skin. Being healthy means that you’ll have great, acne free skin. However, we all know that being a vegetarian doesn’t necessarily mean that a person is healthy. You can be a vegetarian who eats greasy potato chips and loaded cheese pizzas every night. That doesn’t mean that you’re eating a diet that will help you to get rid of acne. In truth, vegetarians who eat a healthy, organic diet are often seen to have great skin. But a diet doesn’t have to be meat-free to be good for your skin, and a meat-free diet isn’t necessarily going to give you beautiful skin.
If you want to eat in order to have acne free skin, the rule is simple. Eat healthy foods with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits in the mix. You’ll not only get the vitamins that you need for healthy skin, you’ll also get the hydration and stay away from the chemicals and food hormones that can make you break out.
