Windows Vista for Small Business

By: Nick Pegley

The Windows Vista operating system was until recently only available to large businesses. However, now this desktop operating system is able to be deployed by small businesses. You'll be happy to hear about some of the new features that Vista has to offer small businesses. Here are some good reasons to consider upgrading:

Windows Defender is built right in, fighting against malware, spyware, and other unwanted software applications. The improved firewall makes connecting with unauthorized PCs impossible, preventing the spread of viruses. The User Account Controls help to lock your users into the correct level of capability, be it the full access needed for power users or the limited level needed for lower-level users.

One only needs to type a single word in order to search for documents, folders, emails and applications, regardless of where they are stored. No longer is there the need to search through menus to locate what you're searching for. You will find a simplified user interface at your fingertips. Also, Internet Explorer 7.0 has tabbed windows to help you navigate between websites more easily.

Store file versions automatically with Shadow Copy. You are able to select key files for backup with the use of Windows Backup Center - just indicate where to keep these files, along with frequency of backup. Share information in an ad-hoc style with Windows Meeting Space. It isn't necessary to wait to add new vendors and partners on the network; instead just share the files that you would like these collaborators to look at.

By creating 'hardware-agnostic' images, you can save the need to create different file versions for each type of computer hardware you use. Easy deployment is possible with the integrated tool suite. Migrating the info over from an old computer is easier than ever with Windows Easy Transfer Wizard.

Improved power management helps to increase overall system performance and battery life. Windows SyncCenter allows better synchronization of PDA, PC, and mobile phones. The simple remote access to the wireless network cuts down on the amount of time necessary to connect from the road.

New features in security, desktop productivity, user controls, and collaboration make greater overall productivity a possibility. Training users to use the new, upgraded system is an important consideration, however; a planned approach is necessary to any major change of operating system. In addition, application compatibility, migration, hardware readiness and deployment challengers should be addressed in advance. With the right approach, you can make the most of all the new offerings and features of Windows Vista.
