So if we take a bargain out of the equation, what constitutes a cheap sauna? The authorities in Canada, namely The Electrical Safety Authority (The ESA) have done some investigating into cheap sauna imports and have come to some worrying conclusions. Amongst other things they discovered a lack of temperature limit control, which, when combined with highly flammable wood material used in the construction, produces a dangerous sauna. Open wiring and open wiring connections behind the sauna walls and the use of unapproved electrical heater further compound the problem. So from a safety point a view, there is no question that here are definite risks to buying cheap saunas. And this assumes that either you or whoever you choose to install your sauna know exactly what they are doing. So what other things should you be thinking about when considering buying a cheap sauna? One thing that is an easy thing to spot is the type of wood that the sauna is made of. Traditionally, cedar wood is the material of choice for high quality saunas. Cedar wood is a soft wood that resists cracking and splitting caused by the heating up and cooling down in the sauna. No sauna wood lasts longer than cedar wood. In addition, Cedar wood contains aromatic oils that are known for their healing and cleansing properties to aid detoxification during the sauna. If a cheap sauna is not made of cedar, then you need to make some investigation into the wood that it is made of. If nothing else, any sauna that is not made of cedar is not likely to last as long. Nor is it likely to have any of the beneficial properties that cedar wood exhibits. You are likely to find that many of cheap sauna manufacturers will use low cost soft wood. This is especially true of cheap imports. Find out what wood the sauna is made of and get some independent advice as to how strong and reliable that wood is likely to be for the job for which it is intended. Also try and find out what the maintenance of the wood is like. If the wood becomes mouldy for example, how robust will the material be for the chemicals needed to clean them.
