When You're Stuck for Gift Ideas, Turn to Candles

By: Chris Robertson

When it comes to gift giving, there are one or two people on everyone's list that are perplexing. Perhaps they already have everything they need, maybe you've drawn their names for a gift exchange, or it could be that you'd like to give them a gift that's personal, but not too personal. In these instances and similar circumstances, candles can make the perfect gift.

There are so many different kinds of candles available that you can truly find something for everyone. Here are some ideas:

For the Traveler: Whether the person on your gift list is a world-weary business traveler or an animated adventure traveler, travel candles make a wonderful gift. Travel candles typically come in small tins that can be easily tucked into a suitcase, a backpack, or the storage compartment of a recreational vehicle. The tins prevent travel candles from making a mess, yet can add a touch of home or of relaxation to any kind of trip.

For the Stressed Out: Those who lead hectic lives often leave little time for self-indulgence or even for relaxation. Whether your gift recipient faces the stress of being a full-time mom or juggling home life with a career, she'll definitely appreciate aromatherapy candles. The best aromatherapy candles use essential oils from plants that have calming and soothing properties. Even if you don't know which essences impart which properties, the pillar candles and tin candles often have names like "Relaxing," "Meditation," "Balance," "Clarity," and "Inner Peace." Giving aromatherapy candles also gives permission for your recipient to take time for herself.

For the Naturalist: Those who are concerned about the environment will treasure soy candles. Soy candles with cotton wicks are not only a renewable resource, but they are clean burning, last longer, and have a wonderful natural fragrance. Soy candles can also be infused with other scents, such as citrus, rose, jasmine, amber, and teak.

For the Home and Hearth: If there's someone on your gift list who takes pride in the appearance of his or her home, candles are a wonderful way to add warmth to home decor. There are gorgeous globe candles (sometimes known as ball candles) that are like works of art - beautiful to admire as an accent piece, and that give off a soft glow when lit. Similarly, vase candles are beautiful to behold, and can add both beauty and fragrance to home decor. Jar candles, with scents like cinnamon, grapefruit, or black cherry, are a wonderful choice if your recipient spends a lot of time in the kitchen, while traditional taper candles and candlestick holders are wonderful for those who like to entertain in a more formal setting. If your gift recipient relishes long soaks in the tub, tealight candles and votive candles can help set a relaxing mood.

When it comes to gift giving, candles are wonderfully versatile, relatively inexpensive, and thoughtful. Plus, you can be sure that every time your recipient lights your gift, she will think of you.
