1. Anxiety: If you have a poor opinion of yourself, you're not like to have any confidence in yourself either. For such people, unfamiliar or uncomfortable circumstances can result in an anxiety attack. 2. Stress: Everyone has some stress in their lives, but for someone with low self-esteem it can seem overwhelming. You might not be as inclined to manage your stress, which leads to increased anxiety and strain. Stress is a major cause of heart disease. 3. Depression: Feelings of despondency and despair are widespread among those who experience low self-esteem. If you feel you're worthless, you'll start to isolate yourself from your family and friends. Cutting yourself off from those who love you allows your negative thoughts to run wild and will take you down the path to depression. Severe depression can even lead to thoughts of suicide. 4. Alcohol Abuse: Others look to the comfort of alcohol to blot out their troubles and boost their confidence. Booze becomes their best friend because it gives them a false sense of self-worth that they don't have to work for. Alcohol loosens inhibitions and makes them daring. Of course alcohol is highly addictive and will take its toll on your health. Alcohol abuse is associated with liver disease, heart problems and cancer. 5. Addictions: Another way people try to build up a poor self-image is by abusing drugs, either prescribed or illegal. The momentary high erases their problems and concerns for a brief time. But the end results of a continuing addiction to drugs are well known and can lead to severe debilitation and even death if the behavior isn't stopped. 6. Weight Gain: People with low self-esteem commonly attempt to fill up that hollow feeling by eating too much. Weight gain is an inevitable consequence, and morbid obesity could be the ultimate outcome. Carrying around too many pounds is linked to heart disease, diabetes and numerous other ailments. 7. Weight Loss: On the other hand, some people with self-worth troubles become fixated on their appearance. They develop eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia in their pursuit of the ideal figure. But no matter how much they starve their bodies, they are never pleased with the results, and eventually they become dangerously ill. These are a few of the serious health issues that can be a product of low self-esteem. It's critical that those who are experiencing feelings of worthlessness get help to learn how to value themselves. Or they might end up dealing with worse problems.
