Website Building - The Basics

By: Jason Smith

There are a few basics to consider when building a website. The biggest
things to consider are how you are going to put your website together and
what you are planning to put in the website as content. Often times the
content will decide the layout or visa versa so both need to be considered
during the same time.

Layout is very important and should be done prior to the website being
published. This will allow you to choose what you want to add and what
you want to take out of the website prior to putting the website online.
You can put a front page or index page up but chances are you will
probably want to make sure that you have several pages of the website
completed to allow people the chance to explore your site.

There are also a bunch of add on features to consider as well. Consider the
purpose of your website. Why are you building it and what do you want
out of your website when you have finished it.

This will give you the basis to build your content. Next layout what content
you would like and where you would like to put it, doing this will tell you
how many pages you are going to need approximately. Each type of
information or each category you are presenting should be given its own
page on your website.

This gives you plenty of room to add or subtract content and keeps your
site well organized. People enjoy visiting sites that are well organized and
that are kept fresh with updates. By organizing your content prior to
placing it on the web you can easily update all of your pages without
worry.

Once you have organized your content and what you want to put on your
website the next step is to pick a layout that will show off this content to
its best advantage. Though there are some who choose their layout they
want first and then decide how to add the content. It really depends on
how much content you have for the site.

It also depends on what the purpose of your site is. Many people want to
create fun and flashy layouts for their websites but have little in the way of
content to place on them; others have more content than can comfortably
fit on a page. For a good website these must come into balance. There
must be a good balance between the layout that is chosen for the website
and the content that is presented on it.

This is the one of the best ways to ensure that only the best quality
website is produced whether it is a personal website or business related. A
website is an online address like your home and should in some part reflect
who you are and what is important to you. This can be shown through the
way the layout and content of a website is presented.
