Viagra: the fastest selling drug in the world

By: Norma

It’s only after the launch of Levitra and Cialis that Viagra has faced any stiff competition. Viagra has ruled the market for the treatment of erectile dysfunction since its FDA approval in 1998. A report had predicted that the Viagra by 2005 it will post sales of $4.5 billion. Instead, its sales were $1.7 billion in 2004, down 11% from 2003.

In spite of those figures the market is still growing at 10%. But a lot of expenditure in advertising and promotion is being pumped into, to make the market moving. Most of these pharmaceutical companies are giving free samples to doctors for patients in hopes of attracting long term users. These freebies came in vogue after the launch of Levitra and Cialis.

Most experts believe that there is still a huge market which can be tapped. Studies show that there are 30 million American men who suffer from erectile dysfunction but only 10 to 15% are being treated. That leaves a huge market to tap.

Pfizer worked very hard to bring awareness amongst people about erectile dysfunction and treatment of erectile dysfunction with Viagra. It was extremely difficult to push people to their doctors and make them talk about ED.

To start with, Pfizer first took approvals from the Vatican and other religious leaders so that there would be no moral and religious objections. And then, they took on celebrities to endorse their product. Pele headed a men’s health campaign about erection problems, and 75 year old former US presidential candidate Bob Dole went public for Pfizer about his own sexual problem.
Pfizer even refrained in all its campaign from calling it impotence. It termed it as erectile dysfunction as it was easier for men to admit that they had erectile dysfunction rather than admitting to being impotent.
Pfizer stumbled on the drug by mistake which became one of the fastest selling drug and a cash cow for Pfizer. In the late 1980’s, scientists were looking for a new treatment for angina. They realized that it was not proving to be an effective treatment for angina patients but the volunteers who had used the drug did not want to stop using it. They noticed that while taking the drug they had better sex lives. Pfizer took the research further and came up with the wonder drug Viagra which changed the lives of millions of people around the world.
The only treatment available was self injection, a vacuum pump or fitting of implants directly into the penis. Viagra changed the way sexual dysfunction was treated.
It is extremely convenient to buy Viagra on the internet. It is highly recommended that Viagra should be used only after doctor’s approval.
