VMware and Your Business Server Environment

By: Nick Pegley

Most IT departments need to reduce expense to run more efficiently, even if managing multiple servers and administering a full network every day. Companies need to keep administration costs and server sprawl in check, and virtualization is becoming an increasingly important solution. There are additional opportunities for leveraging and redundancy as well, helping to maximize uptime. When using virtualization to consolidate physical systems, businesses reap better resource utilization, increased efficiency, and a lower TCO (total cost of ownership).

VMware reduces TCO by consolidating server workloads. Today's machines are usually powerful but not fully utilized - most servers run at about 30% memory utilization and 15% processor utilization. Multiple operating systems can run on a server with VMware, leveraging available resources. As virtual servers can be added to existing machines, VMware also helps maximize hardware investment.

VMware's fast provisioning and installation help reduce TCO, and since multiple servers can run with one piece of hardware, the addition of new servers doesn't require provisioning. This cuts out the need to order, scope and configure a new server, saving time. A new virtual server can be fully installed in hours, as compared to the usually two weeks required for a regular server.

TCO is also reduced through a reduced server administration work load. VMware eliminates about 75% of the work associated with checking server logs and hardware status, lowering the amount of time needed to properly support infrastructure. The amount of time saved can be significant, especially for larger businesses with many servers.

VMware can lower data recovery costs, reduce downtime, and assist with a fast recovery from a crash. These servers can be backed up on another server, so if the server is physically damaged, virtual servers are able to be recovered from a back-up and replaced into another piece of hardware. VMware can also lower the costs of disaster recovery planning, as these sites can be virtualized, reducing the capital costs, greatly reducing TCO and reducing risks.
