Using a Speed Test to Verify Your Download Speeds

By: Thomas Haddelin

With cable and DSL creating faster Internet browsing, having a decent speed test can keep you informed to your connection strength. Finding an Internet speed test for free and actually useful can be a pain.

Be careful when searching for a free speed test. Most contain malware that can actually damage your computer. More often than not though, most "Free" Internet speed tests don't even work.

If you happen to be lucky enough to find one that doesn't contain spyware, you still have to worry about if it actually works right. Finding one that works properly can take alot of time as well.

70% of Americans use at least 1 ISP.

Over 60% of those households have DSL or Cable Internet service.

86% of those ISP's DO NOT provide a speed test for their customers!

Perhaps its insane, but I feel we should be able to test our Internet speeds when ever we feel the need. Why pay just to find out our ISP is horrible?

I didn't, and after hundreds of trials and errors (Not to mention getting rid of all the spyware I collected along the way) I finally found a few Internet speed test sites worth adding to my favorites. The basic idea is this... Find one that actually works, doesn't cost anything to use, and doesn't give your computer spyware, and start checking your connection from time to time just to see how your ISP is doing.

Take care, Thomas Haddelin
