BASICS: The most important aspect of recording and creating sound samples is finding a good sound and recording it from a proper perspective. A good sound can be defined as a sound that changes in pitch and amplitude over time, helpful qualities include the decay, sustain, release, and dynamics. The perspective from which a microphone is positioned to record a sound will determine the qualities of the sound that will be highlighted in the recording. Recording close, medium, and distant will also determine the spatial perspective that a sound can be used in conjunction to a room environment. SOFTWARE: Windows Media Player is the best for delivering content to end users, the quality, file size, and metadata is the absolute best out there. I use Nuendo and ProTools, both available for Windows. With both software platforms there are many plugins that can be used to manipulate sound files. HARDWARE: The hardware you use to record sounds depends on the type of sound being recorded and the environment in which the sound is situated. For example on the movie Seabiscuit, I personally used Nuendo with an Edirol AU-5 to record four hours of live racetrack action from the infield of the track. For the onboard race horses, I used mini Dat machines that were strapped to the saddle for safety. On the Disney film Miracle, I setup eight microphones within a hockey rink and recorded to a Sony PCM-800 digital eight track recorder. For dangerous or secret recordings I use a mini Dat strapped to my body with mini microphones attached to my hat or shirt. NOTES: Safety first - that includes yourself and others. Play your recorded sound back at the site. BRING EXTRA BATTERIES for your hardware. Test your hardware before you record. Practice - your skills and ear for perfection will get finely tuned.
