The symptoms of type 2 diabetes

By: John Richmond

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes can be extremely hard to recognize because there are actually very few of them, and the ones that you may experience are minor, and as a result the disease gets worse. They might in the beginning appear to be of no harm. One might think that they are just the result of being over weight or getting older.

Type 2 diabetes symptoms often seem vague and of no consequence. They are often put at the bottom of our worries list. But this could be a serious mistake because not knowing what they are could kill you.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are increased thirst or hunger, weight loss, fatigue, increased urination, blurred vision, sores that do not heal by themselves, bad circulation, irritability, leg pain and dry mouth.

Almost 6 million Americans have type 2 diabetes and don't even know about it. This could be because they associate the symptom as an illness of another kind when they may be actually at the beginning stages of the disease.

If you are under 45 and generally healthy and fit, it's likely that type 2 diabetes symptoms are not from diabetes at all. However, if you are obese and beyond the age of 45, you might want to consider making an appointment with your physician and advise him or her about your concerns. It may be a false alarm, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

If type 2 diabetes symptoms go untreated, they start to take their toll in the body. High levels of glucose will start to affect blood vessels and nerves. There are several possible complications like kidney disease, blindness, gum infection and it may even require amputation of limbs.

Unlike other forms of the disease type 2 diabetes symptoms may worsen slowly. Your health care provider will give you a diagnosis of any symptoms and determine if they are in fact the dreaded disease. Diabetes is not to be taken lightly and ignoring its symptoms is not advisable.

In addition to watching for symptoms, be aware that there are many risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Some of them come from our family history and genetics and so are with us always, but some can be turned around to help reverse or prevent the disease.
