Home | Reference & Education | Language Living here and other eastern asian countries for 5 years now, I've come to notice the differences in education between here and the west and for the west it's not looking very good - here although not compulsory most schools start foriegn language and culture education at 6 years old in many cases as young as 3!! compared to western culture - where foriegn language education is only compulsory for 2 years in some countries (mostly in the teenage years) and foriegn culture education is mostly non-existant - and this I guess is one of the big differences in culture also. I've always found that many nationals of the east are welcoming, receptive, and intriqued by many foriegners - where as in the west at present it seems many people feel the opposite towards foriegners, unwelcoming, unreceptive and uninterested, don't get me wrong this is a major generalisation and I know this isn't true of all cases. A big factor in being able to accomodate and welcome foriegners is to understand their culture and language (even if it's just minor), but unfortunately the west doesn't seem very willing to incorporate this into their educational policies. How will this effect the West in future generations? Well the world of business and the world in general in fact is becoming more and more open especially in business terms. The fact that Eastern Asian countries have seen this, and prepared for the influx of foreign trade by educating present and previous generations will only do them good, whereas large numbers of Western countries have decided not to implement any sort of strategy to accomodate cultural or linguistic education in their base educational policies. A multi-lingual society can only have benefits, whereas many western mono-lingual states do not have the positives in a global sense, which in turn could, in future generations at least, give Eastern Asian countries a slight advantage. If Education is passive, brick-walled, or ignored, how can tommorows global businessman understand the strategy, needs and wants of his business counterpart?
