Counties located in the northern region of Western North Carolina are excellent sites for skiing. This region, also known as the High Country, includes the counties of Alleghany, Avery, Ashe, Mitchell, Wilkes, Watauga, and Yancey, where the famous Mount Mitchell is located. To reach the region by plane, the fastest way to Asheville is through the Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) which is found 15 miles in the southeast direction from Asheville. The Tri-Cities Regional Airport, or TRI, is nearest to Boone. To access it by train, the region has an Amtrak station in Greenville, South Carolina. For those who prefer to go by car, you have the choice of taking two interstate highways: Interstate 40 or Interstate 26. For those who want to take the bus, Asheville and Waynesville both have stops for Greyhound buses. Some of the sights and wonders to enjoy are the Biltmore Estate located in Asheville, where you can enjoy dinner, wine, and horseback riding at the estate that covers 8,000 acres of land, the Carl Sandburg Home located in Flat Rock, where you can revel in the estate of the famous biographer and poet, the Oconluftee Indian Village in Cherokee, where you can see authentic Native American villages and artifacts, and the North Carolina Arboretum located in Bent Creek, which has a greenhouse complex, an education center, a loop trail and gardens.
