The Luxury of Tiffany & Co.

By: temp

Tiffany & Co. is a silverware and jewelry company that was created by founder Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young. They founded the company in 1837 in New York City. They claimed it was a “stationery and fancy goods emporium.”

Instead of what it's more popularly famous for, extravagant jewelry, Tiffany & Co. originally sold a large variety of stationery items. At this time, the company operated under name of Tiffany, Young and Ellis and was based in lower Manhattan.

In 1853, the original name was shortened to what the world knows it as now, Tiffany & Co. This happened because Charles Tiffany took over the company and decided to make its main focus on the selling of high-class, beautiful jewelry.

In 1940, Tiffany & Co. moved to its flagship store located to Manhattan, on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in New York City. This location is on the list of the United States National Register of Historic Places. The building of Tiffany & Co. is a large granite one that has many tiny windows that display the luxurious jewelry and goods within.

Many famous people have worn Tiffany designs throughout the company's history. Famous U.S. families include the railroad and shipping empire of the Vanderbilts, the Huttons, Posts, Morgans, and the prominent society, politics, and business family of the Astors.

Many of today's modern celebrities and athletes also highly value and cherish many Tiffany designs. Even many modern museums like to display Tiffany & Co. collections, including those from the Art Nouveau period and the Art Deco period.

Tiffany & Co. has also been featured in many popular films and literature. One of the most famous films the company has been seen in is “Breakfast at Tiffany's.” This movie, starring starlet Audrey Hepburn, has many scenes where Hepburn's character is in front of or in the store in Manhattan.

A piece of literature with the store in it is, “Summer at Tiffany,” which is a book written by Marjorie Hart. The book is a memoir of Hart's time working at the store and of being one of the first female floor employees at the store. It documents her time at the store during the summer of 1945. She describes her many brushes with celebrities from the time, as well has other events that occurred in the city during the end of WWII.

There are many Tiffany & Co. stores all throughout the world now. Their locations include Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Paris, San Francisco, Providence in Rhode Island, and Honolulu.

It's safe to say that Tiffany & Co. has been firmly established in United States history for some time now. Now, they are not only famous for their exquisite jewelry but also for the role they've played in history.
