The Lottery NC Education System

By: Candy Tyler

North Carolina has a lottery NC education system that was proudly set up by the State governor himself. It was set up to specifically help areas in education that would improve things for the State and its residents such as the building of new schools and sponsoring of educational grants and academic programs. As a stat-run lottery, anybody in North Carolina can play the game and the concept was at first disagreeable but later on found its way into the law.

In all essence, the lottery NC education system is a bunch of games made available to the public and proceeds that are made through the sale of lottery tickets and other collaterals are donated to various educational institutions. If someone does win in the lottery, that person will receive about 50% of the actual money that is made of sales. After a few payments made to run the system, about 35% of the proceeds are then donated for educational purposes which usually involve the construction of schools.

So how are the tickets sold? In North Carolina, the lottery NC education program has about 5,500 retail outlets that sell the tickets for the games. Currently there are five games that people can choose from: scratch-off tickets, the Carolina Pick 3, the Carolina Pick 5, Powerball and the most recent one being the Sizzlin' Millionaire Raffle. The retailers aren't hard to find either as they all display PLAY HERE signs.

Upon buying a ticket, a person will have to watch a television broadcast of the lottery draw. Participating TV stations broadcast the events live as people anticipate the numbers. All they have to wait for are numbers that match their ticket numbers.

Winning the lottery means that someone has 90 days to collect the winnings. The start of 90 days begins at the time of the announcement of the winning numbers. For the game Powerball, players have 180 days to claim their prize because since the game is an online one, it may take time for people to get to the place where they can redeem their prize.

Players who buy tickets will also have o sign them with their names and numbers. This is important because it protects the buyer from having someone else claim the prize. This isn't a common occurrence but its best to have this measure over nothing.

Not everybody can play the lottery NC education game as it is strictly set for those who are 18 years old and above. The tickets can only be bought at the licensed retails outlets as well. This is also true for the game Powerball. Although it is an online game, the tickets for that game must be bought online at the retailers.

For a short time, the lottery NC education program was the only State in the east that actually incorporated that type of system. The lottery system itself probably would have never been passed to State law but the absence of opponents of the system during the vote helped in its success. But without question, it's definitely something helping in the cause to educate the youth of North Carolina.
