The Hidden Dangers of Owning a Vending Machine Business

By: Robert Farnham

If you want to have a very successful vending machine business then you nee to pay attention. There is more to having such a business than you might think, and the last thing you want are your machines to be sitting in your garage or drive way. Another negative scenario you want to avoid is having them in a location but nothing is selling. Such nightmares are unfortunately the reality of the vending machine business for many people because they fall into the pattern of common mistakes early in the game.

Remember the saying "don't put the cart before the horse"? Well that concept definitely applies to the area of starting a vending machine business. Some people think they can just go purchase all the vending machines they want to and then put them where they want. Well, you need to know right off the bat that this simply isn't the process.

You can definitely buy all the vending machines you wish but you are going to have to spend some time researching good locations for them. You are going to have to think out of the box on this one because you will quickly discover that many of the locations you think of immediately already have vending machines in place that are owned by someone else.

Think hard about how you are going to sell your prospects for your vending machine business to the owners of the locations where you want to put them. If you go to them with an offer they simply can't refuse then you will have a better chance of securing that location. Instead of plugging how it will help your own business think of approaches you can take that offer a win/win situation that you can present

Instead of simply asking the owner of the property if you can place your vending machines on their property you need to make them an offer they can't refuse. Come up with some key points that you can cover during your presentation. By pointing out what the relationship has to offer them will help ensure you are able to get a few of them to give you a chance.

If they want a very high fee in order to secure your vending machines in the locations try another approach. Explain to them that you are just getting started in the vending machine business and you really don't know how profitable it will be. Ask for them to consider a percentage of your profits instead of a flat rate. This way you don't end up owing them money if the vending machine location turns out to be a flop

Make sure all the information relating to the placement of your vending machines is carefully documented in a contract that both of you sign. Make sure you hold up your end of the deal as well. If the owner of the property states that you can only fill the vending machines when his business is closed then honor that. Don't let him catch you out there filling them up in the middle of the afternoon as customers are going in and out of his establishment.

Always try to keep the terms of your vending machine contract open as far as the length of time. While you hope this will be an excellent location for your vending machine you want to be able to move it should that not be the case. You want to be able to explore other options as well so don't commit yourself to any long term relationships in the beginning of your vending machine business.
