The Best Mexico Auto Insurance Policy: Electronic or Paper?

By: Linden Gray

The difference between electronically generated Internet policies and paper hard-copy Mexican Car Insurance policies is quite considerable.

Paper generated policies are issued the old fashioned way by insurance salesmen usually in small neighborhood offices and sent to Mexico using the snail mail approach.

In other words, the agent fills out all the paperwork manually, goes to the post office and mails your policy to Mexico. Many agents in order to minimize costs, don't mail anything until they can send 5 or 6 policies at one time. So your policy may be delayed for a few days.

In addition to the wait, it could take up to ten days for a collection of policies to actually pass through customs and make it to Mexico City. This is where the majority of insurers are found. After that is the processing and entering into the computer database, by hand.

What will happen if you have an accident during a weekend trip when nearly all insurance agents are unavailable and the ONLY establishment that will react is your insurance company?

The Napoleonic Code is the basis for the law in the Republic of Mexico as opposed to the practice of English Common Law in the US and Canada.

Overall, this means that in Mexico, you are seen as guilty until you can prove your innocence. This technically means that as a traffic accident is considered a felony, the police will stop you from leaving until you are able to show proof of a valid Mexican insurance policy. You may also pay for the damages you have caused by instantly paying with cash or other means.

Don't count on your car insurance from home to protect you, it is worthless in Mexico. Because the police will keep you in jail until you can verify you have or can get the funds to pay the damages they say you caused, it is vital that your insurance coverage can be confirmed by the insurer quickly.

Policies that are generated electronically can be sent to insurance company agents around the clock and can instantly be downloaded into their verification systems. This means faster responses and quicker verifications while you are touring Mexico.
