Home | Health & Fitness | Yoga After a short, but thorough training period and certification process, I was thrilled to be able to introduce yoga for children into my classroom. The children were thrilled to be trying out the animated poses--to them it was a lot of fun, but once we sat back down and reconvened the lesson, they were calm, focused and ready to learn. At this point, it's been several months since I began teaching yoga in the classroom, and I am amazed at the results. Probably the most immediate benefit my kids yoga teacher training has brought me is the ability to help my kids relax and extend their attention spans. Other benefits of children's yoga are making themselves gradually visible as the kids develop. Over time, if children continue to practice yoga, especially through crucial developmental stages, they will build strong, limber bodies while setting a stable foundation for lifelong well-being. Furthermore, kids who get an early start in yoga tend to cope with the stressors of life more effectively while discovering a sense of respect for themselves, other people and the environment. The benefits of yoga in learning are becoming clearer and clearer as more educators and parents go through kids yoga teacher training--I see it everyday in my own classroom. Parents and teachers like myself are finding that yoga helps foster imagination, creative expression and concentration--all of which help set patterns of achievement that boost the kids' confidence. My students' are constantly telling me little anecdotes about how their kids are practicing yoga at home and how it seems to have helped them in so many ways. Overall, the parents are thrilled to death that I am doing yoga with the kids. One child's parents even bought a kids yoga DVD from YogaKids so she could practice with her child at home. To any teachers, parents or professionals who work with kids, I highly recommend incorporating a few minutes of daily yoga for children into your schedules. This could potentially be one of the greatest gifts you could ever give the youth in your life, and it is something they can cultivate and use well into adulthood.
