Swimsuit Contest Shows The Ageless Beauty!

By: Vic Darbourn

The swimsuit contest has never held much intrigue or even curiosity for me. My feelings are that if women want to parade around in their swimsuit and be judged by a panel of judges then this is their prerogative. Even though the swimsuit contest still comes in for a lot of criticism, it has been around for a great number of years, and will no doubt be around for a great deal more.

On a positive note, the swimsuit contest has launched many a successful career in the fashion industry. Of course a great number of girls enter these contests solely in the hope that they will be recognized as an up and coming new star. Top swimsuit models have reached star status, and are now on equal footing with the extremely highly paid divas of the fashion industry.

Of course the fact remains, that some women just seem to be born to strut around in a very brief bikini and they look simply fabulous. The problem of course here is that most of us would never be able to enter a swimsuit contest, well not a serious one, that is. Most of us simply have too many curves in all the wrong places.

Unfortunately a large number of women take this whole 'perfect' body issue far too seriously. In fact for many it can make life a miserable affair with a constant battle to achieve this impossible shape. The swimsuit contest has been responsible for reinforcing the idea that to be truly beautiful one must possess a perfect body.

Naturally there is always room for improvement in most people's lives. If viewing a swimsuit contest brings about better eating habits and a commitment to visiting the gym, or even taking an evening walk, then that is an excellent outcome. Swimsuit contests or even pictures of the new season's swimwear often has the ability to prick the conscience a little and wake us from our winter comfort zone.

The swimsuit contest has proven to be an ideal vehicle for raising money or providing promotional support for a great many organizations. For some charities this may well represent their major fund-raising activity for the year. It is difficult to criticize this, particularly when the judges advocate that girls are judged on their poise and physical fitness as well as their beauty.

Some of the more famous swimsuit contest events are those held as part of the Miss Universe and Miss America titles. This section although obviously still very important, is not as prominent as it used to be. Public outcry has been responsible for the swimsuit section now only receiving around 15% - 20% of the votes. Interestingly a national survey concluded that well over 80% of the population were in favour of the swimsuit contest remaining.

Whether you believe that the swimsuit contest is an unnecessary exploitation of women or not, it is certainly here to stay. For most of us, these long-legged svelte looks can never be achieved, no matter how much we exercise or diet. Hopefully though, we can look and appreciate, but not get too caught up in a beauty that is really only skin deep.
