Young, old, rich or poor, male or female all can be nail biters. Nail biting is one habit that doesn't discriminate.

Nail biting can be triggered by any of the following:

*Nothing to do; just bored

* Stress

*Hungry

*Agitation

*Just Sitting Around

*Learned behavior

*Emotional condition like OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)

Medical professionals call nail biting onychophagia. The word comes from the Greek language. Onycho means nail and phagia means to eat.

No matter the cause biting one's nails is one of those difficult habits to stop. Ways of stopping can range from therapies such as behavior modification to medications to hypnosis.

The best nail biting treatment programs are designed with the individual biter in mind. The personal trigger or cause for nail biting needs to be considered. The ultimate treatment goal for nail biting is to have nails in good repair. The goal must also contain an alternative plan to deal with the trigger that starts the nail biting activity.

Habit reversal uses a step-by-step plan to make the individual aware of their nail biting. Then and only then a physically competing response is designed and used to interfere with the nail biting. Habit reversal has been considered a successful and valid therapy in its' success of ending the nail biting habit.

Replace nail biting with other behaviors such as:

* Chew gum

* Have a lollypop

* Keep hands folded and put them in your lap.

* Make hand into a fist

* Move or wiggle your fingers

The best results of habit substitution come when a trained therapist guides the nail biter through the change process.

Every nail biter can stop or change their nail biting. It's just a matter of finding the right plan for the person.
