Home | Health & Fitness | Yoga 1. Avoid using your nail as a screwdriver. As your nails grow longer and stronger, you'll be tempted to use them to help pick and pry things open. Scraping a price tag off a purchase with your nail may seem easy. Unfortunately it stresses the nail leading to broken nails. Use a knife to remove the tag. 2. Protect your hands and nails like models do. Wear rubber gloves for cleaning and washing dishes. Detergents, cleaning supplies, soap and dishwater dry out your nails, which causes breaks and peeling. 3. Avoid hangnails by moisturizing your cuticles. Keep a small container of cuticle oil or moisturizer by your bed. Every night before you go to sleep generously apply the oil or moisturizer to your cuticles. 4. Don't bite off a rough edge on your nail; file it. Buy a multipack of emery boards. Stash them all around your house and your desk drawer at the office, purse, and don't forget your pocket too. So if a rough nail in edge catches on something, you're prepared. 5. Use a gentle nail polish remover to avoid drying out your nails. Acetone-based nail polish removers can quickly remove polish, but they remove moisture as well. Nails low in moisture tend to peel and break. 6. To get a shine to your nails, lightly buff them. Buffing increases circulation to the nail beds. Light buffing every other day improves the appearance and growth of your nails. Remember to lightly buff. Heavy buffing can damage the nail. 7. Defend your nails against fungal infections. Dry your hands completely when washing hands. Buy your own set of manicure tools. Don't borrow or share manicure tools or emery boards from others. If you are having a professional manicure make sure the tools are sterilized between uses. To better protect yourself, bring your own manicure tools to the salon. 8. Eating calcium rich foods like broccoli and milk help nails grow strong and healthy. It's just like you heard growing up: Healthy diets work. Talk to your healthcare provider about adding a supplement such as biotin to your diet to help grow nails. 9. Moisturize cuticles don't cut them. After washing your hands gently push back your cuticles with a towel. Also before bed when you apply hand lotion or cuticle oil gently push back the cuticles. With time the excess tissue will disappear. Cuticles are the primary barrier guarding against infection in your nail beds. So if you are having a professional manicure and the person starts cutting your cuticles, STOP them. 10. Take nail infections seriously as they can quickly spread from one finger to the next. Avoid picking or poking at a nail infection. Call your health care provider to see if you need antibiotics or other treatment to get rid of the infection. Give yourself every possible advantage when growing out your nails. Your decision to stop nail biting is important, so help yourself every way you can. You deserve 10 beautiful nails.
