The first step in becoming an elementary education teacher is your own education and we are not discussing your elementary education degree here. You should be well-rounded in the type of classes you have had. Beyond the basic English, math, science, and history classes, you will want to have had art, music, sociology, and even child development and psychology as well. Your role in elementary education is one of being more of a generalist rather than a specialist (unless teaching specialty classes). An idea that could help is to, as soon as you are able, take up a voluntary position where you will be required to work with small children. You want to do this to just determine if you will like working with this age group and to have the experience to back up that determination. Indeed, your elementary education degree program should require in-classroom time working with elementary age children. Some programs may even require you to have at least eighty hours of work experience before applying to their program. Your next step, of course, will be finishing that elementary education degree from an accredited college or university. If for some reason, you cannot locate a college nearby offering such a basic degree or you already have a bachelor's degree in another field, look at their graduate programs to see what is offered there. Not only can you learn the about the degree and courses and other details of the college you select, it can help you narrow down your college choices. In addition, you can do a search for information regarding the credentials and other matters needed to teach in the state or area you want to teach in after graduating. Upon obtaining your degree, and in order for you to be able to teach in an elementary school, you will need to join a professional association. The main ones that many teachers will join are the American Federation of Teachers or The National Education Association.
