First, you may spend precious time researching a product only to discover that the U.S. store does not ship to Canada. If they do ship to you, expect to pay a premium. Rarely will you find that shipping to Canada is free. Did you decide to pay for the extra shipping costs because the item's price was too low to believe? Wait, there is more... The shipping charge is not the total of the fees you'll have to pay to get that package across the Canadian border, you will also have to consider, and be ready to pay, Canada customs duties, taxes and custom brokerage fees. Because of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Canadians do not have to pay duty on most American and Mexican manufactured items. But be careful. Just because you buy an item from a U.S. store does not mean it was made in the United States. It's quite possible it was imported into the United States first and, if so, you will be charged duty when it comes into Canada. Duties on goods vary widely, depending on the product and the country in which it was manufactured. While reputable sites will list their shipping policies and procedures up front, beware of sites that appear to be Canadian - but in fact are from the states. A practice that is becoming more widespread, particularly smaller U.S. companies, will create web stores that display pricing in Canadian dollars. It is easy to believe that you are shopping from a Canadian site. However, after your credit card is charged and the delivery arrives, you discover that it was shipped from the states and Canada customs duties, taxes and custom brokerage fees apply.
