Shipboard Seaman Terms

For Sea Men and boaters starting out, many terms often used by boaters, cause many a headache in learning these terms.Here for you is a list of most common and widely used terms in the modern day boating vocabulary.

So prepared for you is a basic list, that if you are a boater, you should learn. This can help you tremendously in understanding the lingo used by seaman and boaters.

If you Google On Line Boating, you will find courses where all of these terms are defined. You will become more an expert for your effort in learning them.

1- Overboard - When you are in a boat on any body of water, what is outside of the boat or off of the boat is called overboard. If you fall into the water you have fell overboard.

2- The Bow - The boats forward section.

3- Starboard - Facing forward to the bow, on your right side would be Starboard.

4- Flooding - An incoming overwhelming force and volume of water, that could possibly sink the boat, if not stopped.

5- Cast Off - To let go, as in the boat leaving the pier.

6- Intracoastal Waterways - Canals, rivers, bays tht run along side the coasts.

7- Nautical Mile - A statute mile has a length of 5280 feet where as a nautical mile is an eighth longer measuring in at 6076 feet.

8- Abeam - Not on the boat, but in relation to the keel, it would be at right angles.

9- Stem - At the fron of the boat is the bow. The most forward part of the bow is the stem.

10- Deck - The floor on which the crew and passengers walk on.

11- Tide - Due to the pull of the moons gravity, the water levels of the oceans rise at its strongest pull, and drops when it lessens. In port, the water will be deaper at high tide, and less deap at low tide.

12- Longitude - In the measurement of degrees east or west of Englands Meridian of Greenwich is called Longitude.

13- Latitude - is from the Equator going North or South, for any distance, measured in degrees.

14- Navigate - When you plot, chart and execute your boat trip, from one destination to another, you have nagigated a course.

15- Bearing - An objects direction designated on the chart as it's true bearing, or in relation to the boats heading, it's realative bearing.

16- Bearing - The direction of a boat, either by its true bearing that the chart would show, or by its realitive bearing based on another object.

17- Flood - Incoming water currents,usually from an unwanted opening, on a boat usually unless corrected, is a precurser to the boat sinking.

18- Intracoastal Waterways - Inland waterways, rivers, canals, ajacent to the coasts that water vessels travel through with out going out to sea. Also called I.C.W.

19- Latitude - South or north distance from the Equator, measured by degrees.

20- Below - Often referred to the decks below the top deck or any lower deck of a ship or boat.

21- Chart - Sailers, boaters, often use charts to navigate their voyages. They give the direction and location of various locations, making it easier to navigate to these destinations.

22- Batten Down - When you close doors and water tight hatches, you are battening down. This also includes securing all lose objects and materials so they do not go flying about durring or a storm for example. Battening down can prevent a boat from sinking or people from getting hurt by falling or flailing objects.
