The exact etiology is frequently unclear, although research shows a strong link between stressors and an increase in severity of symptoms.

An alternate explanation for the manifestation of tics is a lack of essential vitamins or minerals, such as magnesium. Facial tics can persist and exacerbate anxious disorders in a child already experiencing significant stress because of the condition itself. Further, educators who fail to understand and fail to aid fellow classmates to empathize and assist the child in conquering his condition can have a devastating effect on a child’s self-esteem.

This issue, however, is not relevant only to the afflicted child. Adults who find themselves dealing with a facial tic encounter significant challenges in managing this problem. Children who overcome the effects of this problem can be freed from the paralyzing anxiety that cripples their social lives, and experience childhood with joy rather than emotional pain.

On occasion, medications, such as mildly sedating drugs, help individuals manage this problem. Although the medications may lessen the frequency or severity of these symptoms, the drugs themselves can often cause adverse effects. For this reason, many people have turned to alternative therapies to assist them in treating their disorder.

These therapies take advantages of the strength of the individual’s unconscious mind to assist them manage the repetitive behavior. Since these therapies are concerned with the origin of the disorder through intervening in the unconscious where the problem originates, they are significantly more beneficial than traditional therapy approaches that just attempt to control eye blinking, mouth twitches, squinting, facial grimacing, facial twitches, grunting, or other types of impulsive behavior.

Hypnotherapy helps the person being treated to reach a peaceful altered state and accept suggestions that assist them to expel anxiety. Moreover, the client learns to use an unrelated body part, such as a toe, to redirect the anxiety that would otherwise be expressed by the facial tic. This technique allows individuals to overcome tension without resorting to the humiliating behavior.

Another positive outcome of these two therapies is that the person being treated does not experience adverse effects from medication type therapies.
