Home | Food & Drink | Wine And Spirits When it comes to health care, the world is full of interesting folksy theories on prevention. Eat this, wear that and so on. Of course, most of these guidelines simply do not work. Ah, but one of the bigger ones is starting to show real promise. Every so often, common wisdom turns out to carry more than a grain of truth in it. We all know chicken soup helps with a cold, even if we don’t know why. Could the same be true for other things? Well, it appears a particular wine may have some benefits. As with many rumored situations, the issue of red wine and its preventative properties has been seeing some medical research. This research has resulted in some interesting findings. Red wine does, in fact, help prevent certain cancers. Red wine is rich in phytochemcials, which are chemicals found in plants. In particular, the wine has a heavy concentration of polyphenols. Some of these polyphenos, such as catechins and resveratrol, have anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties. It is important to understand white wine offers little preventative assistance. Polyphenols are located in the seeds and skin of grapes. These are used in the production of red wine, but not white wine, or at least not in significant amounts. Polyphenols are important to your health because they protect cells. As an anti-oxidant, a polyphenol will block the damaging impact of free radicals. Free radicals can mutate the cells, their DNA and so on. This is one way cancer is believed to arise. Ah, but red wine has another magic ingredient. It is called resveratrol. It is produced by grapes to fight off disease. It is effectively part of the immune system of a plant. Well, studies show it also attacks cancerous growths. Yes, it prevents the growth and spread of cancer. Studies on causal relationships between drinking red wine and cancer are not yet definitive. They simply have not been underway for long enough. That being said, initial findings are positive. Prostate cancer is an aggressive disease for men. Studies have found that drinking a glass of red wine once a day may cut a man’s risk of prostate cancer by fifty percent. Four or more glasses a week can cut the risk by sixty percent. These initial results might lead one to believe red wine is a holistic answer to all cancer problems. It is not. It only appears to work with certain types. That being said, drinking a glass here and there certainly seems to be a smart move. Article Source: http://www.articlewheel.com
