Really improve your search engine rankings

By: brad@ideas2earn.com

So you have built (or had someone build) your shiny new website and installed a hit counter only to discover that no-one is coming to your site. Searching on the internet will bring you all sorts of information around what is known as SEO (search engine optimization) which in plain English means changing the coding of your page in such a way that the big Search Engines (Google, Yahoo, MSN) will push you up top the top of their rankings (i.e. list you at the top of the page before anyone else).

Almost everything I read talks about Meta Tags, "H1" headings and tags or starts talking about “key word density” and the positioning of keywords on the page. The problem with this is that if you actually bother to read the source code for the sites that are at the top of the listings for Google, Yahoo etc you will find that they are often not using these recommended codings.

Try this yourself, type in “Business Ideas” as a Google Search. Pick any one of the top 2 or 3 sites and then when the home page has loaded simply click on on your browser and then . This should open a text file with the page’s raw HTML code in it. Do a search for H1, or alt image and I bet you will not get any results…..I didn’t when I tried it.

OK so everyone is telling you to do something that the top guys are not doing. Either the search engines have changed, or there is a huge conspiracy going on. Let’s assume the former and try to work out what to do about it.

I launched my new site on January 1 not knowing anything about how to get found and to be fair am still learning tricks weekly if not more regularly but it is taking a lot of digging. The first thing I found is that it is important to have links to and from other sites. When you first start it may not seem easy to get links from other sites but here are a few tips on how to do so: -

1. Start a blog they are free and you can put a bunch of links to your site on it

2. Search for + forum. Have a look at some of the results and look for where people are posting regularly and being helpful. When you find this kind of forum sign up. Use your website in your signature, or as your username. Do not try to advertise your site, just try to fit into the community and be helpful. Answer other people’s questions when you can and feel free to ask questions yourself. Every time you post your signature block is getting out there with a link to your website, and you will be generating traffic.

3. Now why am I posting this article? Not for charity although it is free. The idea is that by sharing what I have learned in an easy to read format some other webmasters will want to share this information with their readers. Providing they leave my copyright information (including my web address or url) intact they are free to do so. This of course means that I have yet more links out in cyberspace and you are free to click on the link and visit my site should you so desire. If you want to do the same try signing up to www.articlewheel.com or simply search on article submission” these site specialize in offering your articles to other web users.

4. I set up my own forum using activeboard, who indexed the forum along with all their others and generated a surprising amount of traffic on my behalf. The forum is a useful tool and I think set me back all of about $60

5. Add a “Tell a friend” button to your website. This is a clever bit of code that you can get for free (mine is from Bravenet) and allows your readers to input some web addresses which you do not receive. The “Tell a friend” tool simply sends a message to the emails that are input from the person who input them and advises them to visit your site. In principle this ought to be very powerful but to date mine has not been well used. I have tried putting it nearer the top of my home page and even added text to the effect that any email addresses entered will not be stored. To date this has been used 6 times, one of which was me testing it!

In addition to the above I strongly recommend signing up for a adwords campaign with Google. You don’t need to spend much money, my first month has set me back about $13 but it ensures that Google will index your site more quickly and of course they will send you some traffic.

I have also tried traffic building campaigns with a couple of other providers but have been disappointed by how slowly the traffic has come in.

If you want more ideas the following article is from www.spinsubmit.com, and makes a lot of sense to me. http://www.spinsubmit.com/lesson4-mn.html

Note that even if it these strategies don't boost your rankings they ought to boost the amount of traffic coming to your site, which is the overall game plan anyway.

I hope that you find the above useful, I wish I could have found this kind of information easily a month ago.
