Home | Business | Business Letters Here are a few tips on cleaning hardwood flooring:- 1) Vacuum clean hardwood floors at least once a week to get rid of the dirt and mud that may have accumulated. Preferably use a soft brush so that no scratches or nicks are formed. 2) Hardwood floors should be swept regularly with bristle broom. The broom should be soft so as not to form scratches. 3) Water collecting on wooden floors should be cleaned as soon as possible as it is harmful for wooden floors. Decay may set in or worse still it may affect the grain of the wood. Water left on wooden floors should be wiped with a towel or should be vacuum dried. 4) When mopping PU wooden floors, the mop should not be totally wet or water may enter through the seams and damage a wooden floor. 5) Rugs should be vacuum cleaned often enough so that the dirt doesn't pass through the weave and can cause scratches on the floor. 6) Place floor mats at the entrances so that people walking in don't carry in dirt and dust sticking to their footwear. 7) Some wooden floors may have to be waxed at regular intervals. 8) If the floor has been carpeted for a long time and its floor finish is not known you have to ascertain the quality of the finish before you can clean the wooden floor. You can do this by doing a 'Soundness Test' in the following way: On the part of the floor that is the most worn out, hand spray a few drops of water. If the drops of water stay put for some time, then the floor has a 'sound finish'. For wooden floors with such a finish, cleaners with some water content are also safe to use. On the other hand if the drops of water get soaked in the wooden floor, the floor has an 'unsound finish'. Using water on such floors is expressly prohibited. Using cleaners which are even slightly water based will damage the flooring. Such floors can however be washed with mineral spirits.
