Home | Reference & Education | Psychology It has been proven that if a spouse in the post-partum period is supporting and loving, the woman who just gave birth recuperates faster. How does a spouse accomplish this role of support and love if no one is around to tell them how to behave? It is a common happening that women even after they have accomplished the great task of giving birth will seldom ask for help. Hence, a spouse who is able to “read between the lines” and provide help and support before the woman even asks will be greatly appreciated. It is a modern phenomenon and belief that a woman should be able to take care and assume all the daily tasks in her own house. In reality, the post-partum period is the ultimate period where she needs her spouse’s support and help more than anything. A woman in her post-partum period might and most probably will not ask for help unless she is feels her back is up to the wall. This is the reason, she will not tell out loud that she needs help. In reality, the task of recuperating from a demanding task such as giving birth and the constant care of a newborn baby , especially if she is breastfeeding can be overwhelming , not matter how strong she has been in the past. Most women will not ask for help as this feels like a diminishing and degrading behavior. A spouse who can provide the support and help long needed by a woman who just gave birth will be well appreciated. After all, most of the time, the planning of having a newborn baby has often been a joint decision from both members in the couple, why should the post-partum woman carry all the responsibility?
