Patio Furniture for the Impatient

By: Kathy Moran

Spring is here, and everybody’s ready to bring out the patio furniture and start spending time outside. At the same time, most of us are dissatisfied with the way our yards look. Either the flowers aren’t blooming fast enough, or the whole thing needs a new look. We want color, life, and beauty – and we want it now. Although there’s no way to force flowers and plants to blossom before they are ready, there are ways to make your outdoor living space look spectacular in short order. Among your biggest allies in this endeavor are planters. You may already have them on your porch or patio, but put some right into your garden beds, and you’ll add instant color, structure, and interest. To get the most dramatic and stunning results, use large planters with plants that have bold, colorful foliage, such as coleus, which is an annual that comes in a full spectrum of rich colors. To promote faster leaf growth, pinch off any flower buds. Another breath-taking plant is the Black Magic Elephant’s Ear, which has giant, deep purple leaves, and the ability to grow up to six feet tall in a very short time. Ornamental grasses, available in a rainbow of colors, also look gorgeous in planters. You can create a truly breath-taking spectacle by arranging several planters with various-colored grasses among flower beds and around perimeters. Another way to dress things up fast is to use decorative accessories as focal points in key places around the yard. These help to divert attention from drab areas, especially when you arrange a cozy group of outdoor furniture around them. Water features are great for this, and they don’t have to be grand or expensive, as long as they’re pretty. For example, if you can’t use a free-standing fountain, get one of the smaller, wall-mounted varieties. You can also cover an area with colored stones and put in an attractive birdbath as a centerpiece. Your patio furniture can also play a big part in your outdoor décor. Look for chairs, lounges, porch swings, and gliders that come with outdoor cushions in bright colors and patterns, and are resistant to stains, mold, mildew, and fading. A lot of today’s furniture is available in a variety of vivid colors as well. To polish the look, put down an outdoor rug in a matching or complementary color. The newer, synthetic rugs are eminently durable, fade resistant, and easy to clean.
