Navy SEALs History: Where It All Began

By: Christy Berger & Brenda Stokes

The Navy SEALs, which stands for Sea, Air and Land, had their beginnings back during World War II in unconventional warfare groups such as the Scouts and Raiders, the Naval Combat Demolition Units and the Motor Torpedo Boat Squadrons.

Since then, the groups they sprang from have long since dissolved, but the U.S. Navy SEALs are now the elite Naval Special Operations unit of the U.S. Navy. They go where others won’t. They perform technical missions that require physical stamina and endurance unheard of in other military groups. They are highly-trained for reconnaissance and counterterrorist missions. You name it, the Navy SEALs, do it.

Once more, many of their operations are secretive and not revealed to the public until well after the fact, if at all. The SEALs are known for a high level of accuracy. For instance, during Vietnam, they had a kill ratio of 200:1. And in the Iraq war, they conducted 200 missions without one single casualty.

The U.S. Navy SEALs are the solution the Commander in Chief turns to time and time again for a strong force that will get the job done fast.

After all, it’s not about appearances with the U.S. Navy SEALs. They are a group that delivers the goods. Whether intelligence needs to be weeded out or an area needs to be secured before ground forces can move in, the Navy SEALs have what it takes and have trained for just about anything under the sun.
