Myspace And The Many Facets Of Other Social Networking Sites

By: James M. Crosswell

Everyone knows of the phenomenal success of sites like MySpace and FaceBook over the past couple of years. Reports show a growth of almost 50% in the top social networking sites and a huge growth of over 350% for MySpace alone.

While this has been taken negatively by doomsayers who predict the worst for children who have access to these networks, it is seen as very positive not only by social scientists (who marvel at this growing technology-savvy social beings) but by online marketers who have found a goldmine for the products and services they offer.

While being a fun endeavor, using these social networking sites, the online marketers also are able to meet business contacts, new customers, old friends and even meeting new friends interested in the same things as they are. All the while, making a good profit on the side.

MySpace has dominated the other social networking sites in the USA and UK. While FaceBook seemed to get off to a slower more deliberate start. Facebook is becoming a major contender as it has a more together feel to it. Is it possible that another site could come along and compete with these two behemoths?

Google's $900 million investment in MySpace just last year just for the setting up of Google advertising and search facility on the site speaks well of the economic potentials of MySpace.

MySpace boasts of achieving the 100 millionth account mark in August last year. It has over 300 million registered accounts as of December 18, 2007 and continues to attract 230,000 new account registrants on a daily basis. The efficacy of MySpace as a social networking site is evident with the existing profiles of some candidates for the 2008 US Presidential elections on MySpace.

Even though it seems like there is not ceiling on the growth of the giants of the industry, there are more defined networking sites such as GibLink that have to potential for the same meteoric rise that we have all witnessed from the orignials. The fact that sites like GibLink are specialized gives them a more targeted market than any of the behemoths.

The Internet is an open space of ideas and of sites that are operated by people who invest in them. Those who are meeting big opportunities at MySpace now are the very people who were with MySpace from its inception. You, too, can have this chance if you dare look at other sites. Who knows, it may be worth your time.
