Kids Contests: Where a Kid Can Be A Kid, Creatively

By: Erin Petersville

Kids contests are a great way to ward off the damaging effects of non-stop video game playing, something kids are sure to be doing if parents don't step in to intervene. Imagine that, video game intervention. Who thought this would be necessary? Nothing destroys childhood summertime memories more than being holed up in a dark bedroom, hour upon hour, day after day, wasting away before the mind-numbing, non-interactive control of video games.

With technological advances, it is pretty much certain that if a family has video games in the house, they should also have a digital camera. Kids should be encouraged to use these things to take pictures of the world around them, and go online to enter them into children photography contests. This would include taking pictures on family vacations, a day at the beach or swimming pool, trips to the park, or just hanging out with their friends. It'll teach them to look more closely at the world around them, and to realize there is life outside a video game console.

If your child has a talent for putting pen to paper, then picture contest entries should be encouraged. What better way to showcase this talent than to win a few of these contests. It could bolster confidence and who knows, you might have the next Georgia O'Keefe or even Picasso under your roof. Best to get them out from behind the video game console, else they would never know, and this would be a travesty to all of us waiting to see the burgeoning talent.

Perhaps your child's talent leans toward the written word? Poetry contests, essay contests and short story contests are wonderful ways to tap into this creative reservoir. I even came across a contest online, where kids wrote short adventure stories which took place in foreign countries. What better way to teach a child about world cultures and geography than to have them enter such a contest, using their imaginations and having fun along the way. There are numerous such contests online. A search using Google will reveal all these wondrous opportunities. These are events that video games cannot hope to teach your child.

Another avenue worth pursuing to help your kids avoid getting into trouble over the summer break that doesn't involve the internet is to visit your local bookstore and look for a contest magazine specializing in any area of interest to your child. Many magazines, including photography magazines, often hold contests design specifically for children.

And of course, every parent knows that their little angel is just that - a little angel. So why not prove it to the world once and for all and enter that little cherub into any one of the numerous online cute baby contests being run all across the internet.

Such contests are excellent ways for your children to not only explore their interests and build self-esteem, but there is an underlying benefit to you both. It is usually through such contests that a hidden talent is revealed, leading to a promising career in the arts. I, for one, am a product of kids contests.

Kids contests can be a fun way for a family to spend the summer, building bonds and memories that carry far into their adulthood. I remember all the fun activities of my youth, and they are the most enjoyable memories I have. Fortunately, I have no fond memories of video game playing, although that is not to say I didn't and still don't enjoy the occasional pixelating playtime. I have learned from my parents, however, that other activities away from the game console and flashing television screen provide me with the most long-lasting and deeper-meaning memories of life.
