Keeping Plants Healthy The Story Of Neglect

By: Brad Lelliot

House plants are just like people, it's always easier and much better for all involved to prevent disease than cure the patient. Complete volumes of technical books have been written with studies focused on plant diseases and insects.

If you venture into the world of indoor house plants the amount, which fall prey to death by disease is small when compared to the "disease of neglect" or lack of correct plant care information when caring for many varieties of plants. This article serves as a basic guidepost on the road to success with your indoor house plants.

From thousands of emails received over the past 10 years on houseplants, I've found house plant neglect caused from two basic forms. As mentioned above the neglect from the lack of basic plant knowledge often causes "over care" such as overwatering. The problem I see very often is simply buying a plant and doing nothing, basically paying no attention to the plant and wondering why the plant looks bad. I will admit, when testing new plants to grow commercially, I've purposely put plants in the corner and forgot about them. However, this neglect showed me the problems consumers may experience, so in the end this neglect was with purpose and educational.

Providing houseplants a successful living environment is important for your success as well as your plants over the long term. This includes the basics of the correct amount of light, watering, pruning as needed, and in general giving plants living conditions they can flourish in. These conditions also include an environment you find comfortable as well, like air temperature, humidity and even a special place you enjoy say, reading.

Most houseplants don't need daily supervision or watched constantly like young kids, Some cactus and succulent varieties as well as some foliage plants like Bromeliads, Aspidistra, and Aglaonemas can take long stretches without being watered and their demands are minimal.

However, most houseplants found in your home will require some form of attention and care. This care cost is easy, inexpensive, and delivers big payoffs in both enjoyment they deliver and the sheer beauty they provide to a room.

A little education goes a long way with houseplants. Often times plant failure occurs simply from the fact the plant may not be suited to the environment. For example, a Ficus tree without enough light is doomed to failure. It will always look thin and weak. Yet a Dracaena fragrans will thrive or better yet a Kentia Palm will survive with only reflected light. Some plants may demand a south facing window to capture as much light as possible.

Most plants grown for indoor use possess a fantastic degree of adaptability. They must, in order to survive. Today's home is designed for people not plants, little thought is given by the architects or builders to grow things indoors. Yet, a desert cactus and a fern whose original habitat covers the rain forests in South American mountains can live and do well in the same room. But this usually only happens when the plants have been chosen and cared for with some knowledge and thought. Before you buy any plant try to match the plant and the place it will call home. That one extra step will bring you closer to success with your plants indoors. Because everyone has a green thumb in them waiting to get out.
