Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights which centers on the lighting of candles, dates back to 165 B.C. There are several Biblical references to candles, and the Emperor Constantine is reported to have called for the use of candles during an Easter service in the 4th century. Pagan ceremonies more often than not, utilize candles for invocations. Illuminating the darkness and dispelling the cold was one of early man’s first challenges. Archeological records reveal Paleolithic era gained control of fire. A portable flame such as a greasy torch most likely made elimination much more efficient. From the Egyptians, who made “rushlights” from soaking pithy reeds in animal fat to the Chinese who made molded candles in paper tubes with rice paper as a wick, we have continued to search for a clean and economical source for our flame. The production of paraffin wax candles occurred in 1850. The left over sludge from the bottom barrel of oil, processed by distilling the residues left after crude petroleum was refined, seemed to be a very economical answer to the demand for the illumination we desire. Stearic acid and other chemicals were added for texture. The bluish-white wax was found to burn without much unpleasant odor. Fragrances were added to enhance the candle experience and this cocktail of toxins has become a household item. As people are demanding less toxic, more environmentally friendly products, the popularity of soy candles is increasing exponentially. Not only is soy economical, the use of soy in candles has produced a superior product! The candles burn residue free, toxin free, 45% longer, have superior fragrance throw, cleans up with hot water (yes, you can now get candle wax out of your carpet!) and soy candles support the American farmer instead of the oil fields over seas. Caveat emptor- buyer beware! In this country, our governmental regulations do not always protect us as much as we assume they might. Unless the candle documentation states that it is an all-vegetable blend, a candle only has to have 3% soy in it to be called a soy candle. Attention to a candle’s fragrance also advisable. Not all fragrances are skin safe and may have chemicals that react with some people. Candles illuminate our romantic, poetic and spiritual side.
