Illinois: A Commitment to Society

By: Katherine Stanley

Misfortunes come unannounced and at such times it becomes easier to face the hardships if we know who to fall back on. The sad truth is that we are living in an isolated world and even the families are ending in broken homes. The conventional support system that was available from the family, neighborhood and church is not always easy to find.

Hurricane Katrina brought times of distress and emergency. However, it was good to know that the Government was by the side of its people. These people have paid taxes all their lives so it was naturally expected of the government to help with all the social service they need to build back their facilities. There are some states and their local governments that are more helpful to their people than the others.

Illinois is one of the greatest states to live in because of its commitment to the well-being of its citizens. In times of need, social support and services are available to help in the state of Illinois. While there is not time to list all of the options available to citizens, here a few of the great ones to keep in mind.

The Midwest winters are very harsh that lead to inflated heating bills causing problem for the Illinois residents. However, the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program (IHWAP) assists the residents of Illinois in preparing their homes for the brutal effects of winter and simulataneoulsy keeping the heating bills low by more efficient energy consumption.

IHWAP exists to help low income families survive the harsh Midwest winters. IHWAP can help with things like getting replacement windows and weatherizing one's home against the elements. IHWAP will also arrange for licensed contractors to come out to your home and maintain your heating and air conditioning systems.

The state of Illinois provides medical assistance to children of poorer families. Considering that medical bills can go beyond control, especially for those who barely make enough to make both ends meet, this is a great help. These services take special care of single parents who cannot afford health care services for their children.

The program through which the state of Illinois provides health care services to children is Kid Care. This service provides medical assistance to children of low income families and also provides pregnant mothers with the necessary resources to get proper neonatal care. In addition, the state of Illinois pays premiums in certain circumstances to parents who have insurance through their employer or a private insurance company.

Apart from the above, the state of Illinois has a number of other great programs that help to enrich and improve the quality of life of its residents. It helps you if you can't pay a high utility bill or you can't afford to take treatment for an addiction. Basically, the state of Illinois helps you get back on your feet after a hardship. It takes the sting out of the worst calamity, and helps you survive the most trying times.
