How to Keep the Brain Growing.

By: Trevor Kassulke

Although the brain isn’t a muscle, regularly ‘exercising’ it will keep the brain growing and spark development of nerve connections that help memory to improve. Through studying how the brain and memory works scientists have learned realized there were things that you can do to make improvements to your short-term as well as long-term memory.

This can be as simple as paying closer attention to details during certain times, for instance, when you meet someone for the first time. If you are nervous or even distracted you might not catch a person’s name which will make it more difficult to remember later on.

It takes approximately eight seconds for memories to move from the short-term memory area to long-term storage areas. If you do not pay enough attention to details you can have difficulty remembering them later.

Another technique is over-learning, which is learning by repeating something over and over until it is stored in the long-term memory. This technique is commonly used by children and is used in song form often.

Like riding a bike, the other techniques may seem complicated at first but once you get the hang of it they become as natural as any other process.

Learning different techniques to improve your memory is often affected by the teachers you have. In example, some researchers will suggest that you chew gum to improve your memory and increase the amount of brain power you have. Others claim moving your eyes from side to side for at least thirty seconds can help your memory.

A healthy diet that is based on whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats can improve your memory as well.

No one method or technique is available that will improve everyone’s memory. It is important to exercise your brain or you not only will not make improvements in memory, you will lose the connections that you aren’t using in your brain.
