How to Become a Voice Over Artist -- Be the Artist that Wins Over Customers with Your Voice

By: Virginia Culp

Perhaps you've gotten compliments about your speaking voice. Maybe you've even done some public speaking. You're no artist, but you're thinking about making a move to doing voice over work. You know how others are making a killing with audio products in the Internet Marketing field, but you're uncertain how to proceed. Maybe you even doubt your ability to make your voice a selling point. You may not think you're enough of an artist to win over customers with your voice.

Fortunately, once you learn a few specific techniques and practice them until they are a habit, you don't have to be a professional announcer to make your audio message a pleasure to listen to. Think of being a voice over artist that gets out of the way of the message you're delivering. What you have to say will be more important than how professional you sound. In fact, as long as you sound like you're friendly and interested in the listener, that will count for much more than perfect delivery.

Develop your ability to speak in a continuous flow by recording yourself and listening to the result. It's important that you cure yourself of excessive "uh's" or "um's". Little quirks like smacking your lips and excessive throat clearing can be annoying and distracting to a listener who's interested in the message you're delivering. Speaking too rapidly or too slowly will also detract from the message; pace your delivery with the tone of the message itself.

Most importantly, think in terms of speaking to one, special person, rather than a crowd. If you picture in your mind a specific person and speak to that person as if you were face to face, you'll find yourself hitting the right tone and emotional "color". It's not your job to be an artist who uses tricks and techniques that are over the top and exaggerate your voice. Communicate naturally, be "approachable" and reach out to your listener with your tonality.

Practice will help, but perfect practice makes perfect. You may stumble a lot at the beginning, but keep at it. Eliminate as many distracting quirks as you can. Don't aim for perfection -- aim for transparency. Make the message you speak the most important thing!
