How a Free Poker Site Helped Me Teach My Husband a Lesson

By: temp

Saturday night - poker night. Time to prepare snacks, put the beer on ice, and put the ashtrays out. It's poker night for my husband and his friends, as it is every Saturday. I sit in the next room, hearing the murmur of the verbal jabs they take at one another between lapses of deadly silence, and then the explosion of laughter and cheers when somebody plays a good hand. Just a game to perpetuate bonding among friends, right? I asked my husband to teach me, but he said one gambler in the house is enough. Personally, I think he knew I'd be good at it, and I decided to see if I was right.

I went online to learn the rules and techniques of all the games (and there are a lot). I looked on top poker sites, figuring there would be excellent tips there. I was right. I learned Seven Card Stud, Omaha, Pineapple, and my favorite, Texas Hold 'Em. I learned about betting, blinds, and bluffing. I found articles on the top poker sites about discipline, managing the pot, and using peoples' bad bets against them. And I became convinced that I could do it - go in there to that poker room, with my intelligence cutting through the beer fumes and cigar smoke like a shark (a card shark to be exact), and take some money for myself. But the fantasy was cut short by the reality that these guys were experienced, and I was like a kid on the playground waiting to take the big slide.

Practice makes perfect, though, and so I found myself a free poker site. This was ideal. I was able to engage in games with real players, without losing face or money. I found sites that offered free poker money for a very small initial investment (my $20 got me $500 playing money), and I even found a couple of sites that offered free poker money with no input from me at all. So began my education into the world of poker. Slowly, on the free poker site, I got better. It wasn't easy - it took a lot of practice and patience. I had to learn to be careful, take my time, and "read" my opponents, even though they weren't technically in front of me. I learned plenty of techniques, I learned all the rules, and most importantly, I gained confidence. At last, I was ready.

One night I put an extra chair at the table, and this time when I brought out the chips and beer, I threw my ante into the pot. "Deal me in," I told my husband. He raised an eyebrow but he didn't protest. I saw satisfaction on the faces of the other boys. They thought a there was a guppy in the shark tank. I started by throwing fake "tells" at them, deliberately tugging at my ear when I had a bad hand, and I could see that they thought they had a true amateur at the table. I waited, ever so patiently, until I had an ace and two jacks in my hand with two aces showing on the table. Then I tugged my ear again, while looking properly pensive, as I placed my bet. The hand was down to me and my husband, and he grinned as he turned the three tens he'd gotten straight out the gate. There was a moment of deadly silence while everyone waited, and then an explosion of laughter and cheers as I turned my own cards. I had arrived.
