How To Anticipate The Rules Of The Future By Finding Your Passion In The Present

By: Neil Graber

Is it possible to travel on a round-trip ticket back in time to find and develop your passion so you are better prepared when you return to the future? Let’s pretend for a minute we are Marty McFly from the movie “Back To The Future” and the year is 1985. Marty is pursing his love for music, his special girl is Jenny, and his one true friend is Doc Emmett Brown. In a series of events involving Doc Brown’s DeLorean “time machine”, Marty ends up in 1955. Through most of the movie, Marty is working to get back to the future and pick up his life where he left it. Marty did a good job of resisting changing events which would have impacted the future when he returned – but what would we do if we could implement or change a few things now that would alter our future for the better?

We can already see changes in jobs and the workforce. A New York Times story identified nearly 75% of our households have had a close encounter with layoffs since 1990 with about a third of those cases where a family member did lose their job. We don’t require a crystal ball to know those numbers will only increase. The suit and white shirt has been eliminated with the layers of management. The predominately man’s world of recent decades has gone from “suits” to “business casual” to men and women wearing jeans and a t-shirt as technical positions become available. The number of individuals working as entrepreneurs with a home based business continues to increase. Downsizing will continue as it has for years as companies shed expense. Years ago a plant may have shut down for a few weeks to bring down inventory, but today don’t hold your breath as the “return to work call” will probably not be coming from your company. Rule # 1 for the future is: Jobs are changing.

Companies are changing along with jobs. The trend is away from delivering the same product at a lower price which can be sold to the masses, to, customized goods and services specially designed to a smaller, more defined group of consumers. No longer can we depend upon that one large company as we individually climbed their corporate ladder to greater responsibility. Success today in many cases comes from one’s creativity, the ability to perform multiple tasks, using ones personal traits, and working as a team to deliver a new product or service. Yet once that new product or service is delivered, the team may be disbanded. So today we must discard the autonomy of our old self and develop relationship and networking skills. As we perfect those skills, the more likely we are to attract and connect with others. The better we treat others, the better treatment we will receive. Individuals with poor attitudes and a chip on their shoulder will soon find themselves outside looking in. Rule # 2 is: Develop your networking skills.

Rule # 3 is: The internet and technology changes almost daily – and with it the world grows smaller. Not too many years ago communication was conducted primarily in person or through the mail. Then the telephone was introduced and people had a new way to connect. Next on the scene was the internet as a communication tool. Today we use the super highway to conduct business such as viewing our checking account balance and paying bills, trading stocks, and purchasing goods and services. Pictures and video are now being introduced to the internet and before long we will be sending video clips instead of writing an email message. Think where the retail community is headed as we work our way to an anticipated 50% of the goods and services sold in the next few years coming across the internet.

Our last rule will deal with our education. The bottom line is people with more education will continue to be positioned to earn more than those with a lesser education. People will still specialize in certain fields, but for the most part, the more skills you possess will improve your position for success. People of all ages will continue to educate themselves both in actual classes as well as on-line study to develop a portfolio of flexible skills and relevant skills. Individuals who position themselves with new and emerging skills for developing technologies will reap the benefits while others strive to catch-up. No longer can we look at education as something we will do only early in our life. Explore the areas of your life you enjoy – find your passion in those areas. Then continue to build on them by exploring new ideas and opportunities and continuing to learn about the areas you enjoy. Rule # 4 is: Continue your education throughout your life.

In our short trip we traveled forward to the future and now we are back. Are you open to finding your passion and then developing that area as you prepare for the changes in the future? The next steps are up to each of us. How we prepare ourselves will determine our success and happiness. Find what you enjoy and are good at. Then develop it and do it like no one else. Embrace the changes, enjoy the journey as each destination is only a stop in the travel to another place.
