Halloween in the United States: On Halloween night in the United States, children dress up in various freaky Halloween costumes and go trick or treating with their buddies. They get yummy treats or play pranks on anyone who turns them down. No one dare refuse candy or other non-food treats to these ‘sweet beggars’ on this shady night of Halloween when out-of-this-world rules apply ! This outré night of the year many people light bonfires to scare away the ghosts. Halloween parties with fun freaky games like ‘Bob for apples’, ‘Doughnuts on strings’ and special Halloween treats like caramel or candied apples make it all a howlingly fun affair in the US. The Jack O’ Lanterns that glare at you, are frighteningly popular too in the nation Halloween in England: Halloween in England is the Night of Mischief ! People would take the doors off the hinges and throw them away. Children play pranks and blame them on the “innocent” ghosts and goblins doing the rounds on earth this one phantom night. In England, Halloween was earlier coupled with Guy Fawkes Day, which commemorated the execution of a notorious English traitor, Guy Fawkes. Nowadays, on Halloween, the English people light bonfires of effigies and the children go trick or treating, which originated from the practice of asking for soul cakes. Quite contrarily, white cats are considered bad luck in England instead of the usual black ones. Freaky parties with future-reading and fortune-telling are a fun feature. In England, Halloween is also called the Nutcracker Night or Apple Snap Night because people would eat roasted nuts and apples on this day. Halloween in Spain: In Spain, Halloween is a religious festival with celebrations spanning two days. On November 1, All Saints’ Day, Catholics attend church to honor the saints and martyrs of the faith. People visit the gravesites of the deceased and often a mass is observed at the gravesites praying for the peace of the dead. November 2 is All Souls’ Day, when the people attend special requiem masses and light votive candles and say special prayers for the dead. The black cat is considered bad luck and is never allowed in homes. A special cake called ‘Bones of the Holy’ is eaten on this Halloween day in Spain. Halloween in Canada: In Canada people welcome trick or treaters on Halloween with Jack O’ Lanterns on window sills and porches. Children dressed as witches, ghosts and goblins go hunting for goodies and are given treats else they play tricks on them. Without candy, these are the real devils of the night !
