The company began way back in 1905 when a German by the name of Hans Wilsdorf garnered his brother-in-law Alfred Davis to help him create watches. And that they did. Though neither of these men were Swiss or watchmakers, they created a small company they called Wilsdorf and Davis. This was the origin of what would later become the Rolex Watch Company. Initially these men imported Swiss parts to England, and used Dennison as a supplier for quality watch cases. Wilsdorf and Davis then sold their pieces to local jewelry stores with their names on the watch dials. Today, if you were to find the earliest pieces of the Rolex Watch Company, they would be marked with W & D on the inside of the watch caseback. The name changes to Rolex in 1908, and although there are many stories floating around as to its origin, there is one story that keeps being told. The term Rolex comes from a combination of letters from a French term "horlogerie exquise" that translates into exquisite watch industry. Another story you may hear is that the name was created to signify movement in English vocabulary. 1912 brought the W & D company from the United Kingdom where they started their work into Geneva, Switzerland which is where the company still thrives today. The purpose behind the move was that export duties and taxes into the United Kingdom were becoming extravagant, as were the costs of gold and silver for the metal casings. Even with these rising costs, W & D worked to make these watches both durable and accurate. Initially with the war going on and many soldiers away, these watches were marketed to the women that were left at home. Once the men returned home, the watch's popularity skyrocketed when the bravest men in the world were seen sporting Rolex time pieces. As popularity boomed, so did improvements to the watch. The watch became dust resistant as well as waterproof and Rolex has been credited as the first company to provide a water resistant watch. Their next major advancement came with the self-winding feature in 1931 which was novel enough to last and is seen on many brands of wrist watches today. Today the Rolex Watch Company is named Rolex SA and exists as a foundation. Rolex SA remains a family owned company and can not be sold or publicly traded. The Rolex brand today is the most popular and prestigious watch brand globally. This brand is one that is synonymous with prestige, quality, and innovation.
