As in most homes, space always seems to be limited, especially in a home with children. We happen to be blessed with two girls. Every house we've lived in has had that one extra room, but that room always seems to become the "toy room" instead of the dreamed of "sports room". And with two girls, our toy room is stuffed with dolls and mini-kitchen sets which is about as far away from sports as you can get. As the girls get older, they are catching the sports bug, but not enough to let their dad take over their toy room with his baseball cards. This doesn't stop my husband from dreaming. He reasons that the kids won't play with toys forever, nor will they live with us forever (hopefully). So someday, that toy room will be all his. I believe he even has it planned down to the last detail. The theme will start with his "priceless" baseball cards and proceed to memorabilia from the football team from his alma mater, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Of course, it will also include trophies from his softball tournaments and a big screen TV so he can watch ESPN day and night. In the meantime, our attic and bookcases are slowly filling up with items my husband calls "collectibles" that simply cannot be discarded. After all, what will we put in his sports room once it becomes his? A good friend of mine has a husband with similar tastes and they also have children. They compromised and decorated the guest bathroom in a golf motif. Now, I know you're thinking that a guest bathroom is not nearly as great as room with space for a TV. But this bathroom is fun and way more memorable than my feminine gold and flowery guest bathroom. It has a style all its own, with the golf ball guest soaps and putting green soap dish. And it was just enough to make her husband happy to continue living amongst the dolls and mini-kitchen sets for a few more years while he continues to design his perfect sports room in his head. I have to think that my friend's idea has some merit. If I can find a small space in my home to give him for a small sports indulgence now, I can claim that toy room for me when the girls move on. There are so many choices for sports nuts for gifts. Think about a personalized leather flask for golf nuts on the course or he'll love a golf moneyclip
