Get a New Mind

By: Bishop Eddie L. Long

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

Church has become Entertainment Tonight. We worry about what conferences are coming...what celebrity preachers are in town...how many folk fell out at the altar. Nobody changed, but it was great entertainment. Something has to be done about that. I love church, but here is my challenge: Why is it that we have been hearing truth so much with such slow change? Why is it that it is so difficult for us to turn the corner, to walk in power, in wealth, in the things we shout about?

There is something I want to attack: the subconscious mind. Once you have completed a task for the first time. Your mind tends to gather and process information for future retrieval. When you do it a second time, your mind does not have to think as much. If you do it enough, it becomes automatic. This frees up the conscious mind, and then your subconscious mind becomes your auto-pilot.

The subconscious mind is amoral; it is neither good nor bad. It has the task of assessing and handling reality as it is perceived by the will of the conscious mind, and it keeps individuals locked into a belief system. Many will hear the truth, shout about the truth, and feel like, I'm going to walk in the truth. And a few days later, they are back to where they were.

They have already established a value system. Such that when truth hits, it is rejected by auto-pilot. Everybody is doing what they feel is right in their own eyes; instead of being led by the Holy Spirit, they are being led by their subconscious. The Holy Spirit works within us (John 16:13), in our mental facilities, and serves the conscious mind in a long-term operation of a belief system. Essentially, through the Holy Spirit, God says, I've got to get out of Myself so I can get into you because you have taught yourself some values, and you don't know the truth.

Don't fear the subconscious mind, but allow it to be trained. Be careful what you put on your backup hard drive. Although you have been hearing the word through preachers for years, in your upbringing, somebody told you that preachers were crooked and they want your money, so you still have a problem trusting them. No matter how consistently he proves himself, you are still waiting on the day he falls, because in your mind, something has to be wrong. So it hinders you from hearing from God because your subconscious mind is ruling. God speaks through those who are sent.

Advertising understands the subconscious mind. During Thanksgiving, you break your diet regimen because it has been programmed over and over in you that if you don't have certain things on Thanksgiving, then you are not having Thanksgiving. They start showing you what you should have 30 days before thanksgiving. The movies
understand it. I cannot go to a movie and not eat popcorn because it is so reinforced in my subconscious mind.

Another way advertisers take advantage of our conscious minds is through commercials: they understand repetition. Advertisers know that if they show their product to you enough, your conscious mind gives access to your subconscious mind and so when you see the product, you buy it. If advertising has that much power, how much power do you think the word of God has if you continue to bombard yourself with scriptures of
prosperity, healing, walking in unity, etc.?

You will know how to pray for your enemies, how to be slow to speak and quick to listen, walk in the Spirit, and not give in to the desires of the flesh. It will be automatic. When people say how do you walk so righteously, you will say, how do you not? We won't even have to think about it.

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness (Eph 4:23). Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. We have a misinformed belief system because our mind has not been transformed. Get a new mind.
