100 copies of “Mentors on Video” to be given away at Miami Book Fair

A publisher of educational DVDs, The EbookMan, has announced a program to donate 100 copies of a DVD called “Mentors on Video” at the upcoming Miami Book Fair. A CD to stimulate use of podcasts will also be offered.

The book fair, in its 25th season, is expected to attract over 200,000 visitors during its main event, the Street Fair held on the weekend of November 9-11. The fair was started in 1983 and has grown to be the largest book event in the USA.

“Mentors on Video is a program that delivers short videos to students to motivate them to follow their passions in school,” Steve McCrea explained. “By donating these videos, I hope to inspire teachers and students to emulate these remarkable mentors.”

McCrea also announced his plan to give away “Put Something Useful on Your Child’s iPod” to any parent accompanied by a child wearing an mp3 digital player. “There’s so much more than music that can be heard on an iPod,” McCrea added. The CD contains short videos to explain how to find and download educational podcasts.

ABOUT Mentors on Video
Mentors On Video started in 2004 when McCrea invited adults to speak to his 8th grade class at Downtown Academy. The presentations were videotaped and placed on CD for the students to review later. When the file-sharing site youtube.com become popular a year later, McCrea placed the mentor videos on two accounts, “mistermath” and “Mentorsonvideo.”

“It’s a non profit idea,” McCrea explained. “I sell educational videos and I often have 150 or 200 megabytes of empty space on a DVD. Why not throw in two or three mentors on video?” McCrea added that his web site called Roadlovers.com is also available for samples. McCrea's current projects include working on a Thought Dial book.

Ten New Mentors
McCrea hopes to collect more mentors on video at the Miami Book Fair. “I’ll bring my camera and put up a sign inviting adults to tell their story in three minutes. There are three questions: 1) What do you remember from middle school that you still use today? 2) What teacher are you grateful to and why? Why not say thank you on camera and inspire other teachers? 3) What book or article did you read in the past year and what makes it worth talking about? These three questions communicate to students the value of continuing education after high school.”
