Find Treatments For Genital Warts

By: Paul Winter..

Are you suffering from genital warts? Warts, whether found on ones genitals or anywhere else on ones body, are caused by the human papilloma virus HPV. HPV comes in a variety of strains that cause different types of warts. It is infectious and can be passed on during unprotected sex. Genital warts is one of the most wide spread sexually transmitted disease.

If you have genital warts, you should know that you do have a number of treatment options. Please keep in mind though that those genital wart treatments do not "cure" the problem as there is no cure for HPV.

General Information About Genital Wart Treatments

The primary focus of genital wart treatments is to remove any warts that are visible in order to stop any symptoms that might be bothering you such as burning sensations, itching or occasional bleeding. Having these warts removed can help to reduce the risk of your sexual partned being infected with the HPV virus. You should still practice safe sex!

Your doctor will take into account the size of your warts as well as how many you might have and where they are located when choosing which genital wart treatment to use. Additionally you will want to consider the cost of the treatment, any potential side effects and also whether your insurance will cover the cost of the treatment. Some genital wart treatments can be done at the doctors office or even at home, others require a visit to hospital.

Primary Genital Wart Treatments to Consider

Depending on whether your warts are prolific and spread about your entire genital region, most doctors will choose to start you on a course of topical cream or gel. Topical genital wart treatments can either be self-applied at home or applied by either a nurse practitioner or a doctor in a clinical setting. Imiquiod and Podofilox are the two main topical treatments that are available, they can be self-applied only to external warts.

Some warts located in particularly sensitive areas like inside the rectum, urethra and cervix require alternate therapies. In these particular cases, genital wart treatments may include cryotherapy, surgical excision and electrocautery. Cryotherapy involves the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze off the warts while electrocautery is the use of electricity to burn the warts off. Surgical excision requires a more formal clinical setting as it involves the cutting off of the warts.

Genital wart treatments are varied and the right type of treatment will vary from person to person because everyone's body is different as well as their tolerance of pain. The right treatment for you should be decided by you and your doctor who will advise you on the best way to get rid of those warts. Remember, thanks to the HPV virus, all genital wart treatments are only a temporary measure and the warts may come back.
